At Classic Subaru of Atlanta, our team understands that finding the right SUV takes time. One of the most common comparisons that our buyers make is between the Subaru Outback and the Toyota RAV4. Each model is powerful and capable - which one will you choose?

Exterior Design

Our team knows that appearances matter; since the Outback and the RAV4 have dramatically different designs, the exterior is often a big consideration for buyers. The Outback has a sportier look that's right at home in a campsite or the office parking lot - the black design accents lend this SUV an edgy, rugged look. The RAV4, on other hand, features a more sculpted, city-centric body shape. Both models feature LED headlights. If you're thinking of going off-road, the Outback offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance, while the RAV4 offers 8.6 inches.

Are you planning to carry gear? You'll love the Outback's raised roof rails, which come standard on every model. They're equipped with retractable cross bars that make it easy to load up your bikes, kayaks, or roof boxes. The RAV 4 comes with low-profile roof rails, but you'll need to pay extra for cross bars. Raised rails are only available on specific premium models.

Performance

Whether you're driving around town or driving down mountain trails, performance is crucial. The Outback features a Subaru BOXER engine, which uses horizontal pistons to deliver a balanced, smooth ride. Each trim level also includes a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) for exceptionally smooth shifting. The RAV4 features a 2.5L four-cylinder engine, but the CVT is only available on non base-level models.

When it comes to traction, the Outback shines - every model comes standard with a symmetrical all-wheel drive system that delivers great traction when the road gets slippery or muddy. The RAV4 is available with all-wheel drive, but only as an upgrade.

Are you thinking about towing a boat or trailer with your SUV? The base-level Outback offers a maximum towing capacity of 2,700 pounds. In comparison, the base-level RAV4 can pull up to 1,500 pounds.

Interior Features

If you spend many hours on the road, comfort plays a big role in your satisfaction. The Outback comes with a completely new interior that's designed with passenger comfort in mind. The soft-touch materials feel cozy and luxurious, and the contrast stitching creates a sporty yet elegant look. The RAV4 features a sleek interior; if you'd like a sportier vibe, you'll need to choose the upgraded packages.

Both the Outback and the RAV4 come with automatic transmissions; however, the Outback features standard paddle shifters to give you a fun, race-car inspired driving experience.

We know that contemporary drivers need a vehicle that supports a technologically heavy lifestyle. Both vehicles feature multimedia systems that come standard with 7-inch screens, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. However, things start to change when you move beyond the base level. In the RAV4, you can get a larger 8-inch screen, but only on the premium models. If you choose the Outback, every model beyond the base level comes with an all-new 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus screen. It comes with advanced features like NFC technology, STARLINK cloud apps, a high-resolution multi-gesture touch screen, and a stunning high-resolution display.

Do you want navigation? It's available with all Outback models that feature the larger display. On the Rav4, this option isn't available until you upgrade to the highest trim levels. The same goes for wireless charging. If you prefer to charge using a USB cable, every Outback model comes standard with two USB ports in the front. On the RAV4, you'll get a single USB port.
