The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek vs. the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross: Which small crossover is best for you?

If you're like a lot of Atlanta, GA drivers, chances are you've been looking at these two models and asking yourself just such a question lately. Both of these small crossovers come from well-respected brands, but if you take a close look at each, you'll note some key differences between the two. Explore our competitive breakdown to find out which of these two is right for you.

Powertrain

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is plenty capable for daily driving in Atlanta, GA, but its engine powertrain options leave a lot to be desired. With it four-cylinder engine, the Toyota Corolla Cross only offers up to 169 horsepower.

Now, that's a just a bit more than what the new Subaru Crosstrek offers with its standard SUBARU BOXER engine, but it lags behind its most powerful engine options. In fact, with the new Subaru Crosstrek Sport and Subaru Crosstrek Limited trims, you can enjoy up to 182 horsepower on demand, greatly eclipsing the power that the new Toyota Corolla Cross offers.

Performance

Much like many of our newest Subaru cars, the new Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. By comparison, the new Toyota Corolla Cross can be had with all-wheel drive, but it only comes standard with front-wheel drive. Plus, the Subaru Crosstrek has a much higher ground clearance than the Toyota Corolla Cross, meaning it can travel off-road with much more ease, so it's ideal for shoppers who want to get away from the greater Atlanta area and explore the countryside from time to time.

Interior

While both the Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross may look small on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts. In total, the new Subaru Crosstrek offers up to 100.9 cubic-feet of passenger volume, while the new Toyota Corolla Cross lags a bit behind with just 93.9 cubic-feet of passenger volume. Plus, the interior materials of the new Subaru Crosstrek are much more durable than those of the Toyota Corolla Cross, with features like water-repellant Subaru StarTex® upholstery keeping the cabin feeling comfortable and pleasantly upscale when compared to the standard cloth upholstery of its competitor.

Technology

Both the Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross have infotainment systems that pair easily with most smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to easily connect to your favorite apps, make hands-free calls on the go, and answer text messages using voice functions. However, the new Subaru Crosstrek also offers available onboard navigation, which the new Toyota Corolla Cross lacks.

Safety

The new Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross are on relatively even footing when it comes to safety features. The Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with Subaru EyeSight® and the Toyota Corolla Cross offers Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0.

The Verdict

While the new Toyota Corolla Cross and Subaru Crosstrek may both offer room for five passengers and have roughly the same standard safety features, the new Subaru Crosstrek outclasses its competitor in terms of tech, performance and overall sophistication. Plus, if you're looking to travel off-road, the new Toyota Corolla Cross simply doesn't have the capability to match the Subaru Crosstrek.
